Language Training - Methodology
The methodology advocated and implemented by RTS is the Direct Communicative Method, which takes the best from the communicative, visual, cognitive and behaviourist approaches in order to accommodate a variety of different learning techniques.
Common European Framework
The assessment system used for attributing linguistic proficiency levels is the Council of Europe Common European Framework. This is well known around the world and provides a recognised international standard.
Objectives-based learning
Within this framework, we adopt an objectives-based methodology.
One of the key objectives of a lesson plan is the creation of scenarios the participant could find him/herself in at work. We believe in a hands-on approach to learning. Through active involvement in role-play, meetings, presentations, discussions and reporting the confidence and competence of the participant will increase. The methodology concentrates on the four main skillls of listening, reading, speaking and writing by using modern mediums like the internet, and audio and video equipment. The course helps the participant to perform effectively, whether it be reading/listening in a passive context or speaking/writing in an active context.
Context is key for creating associations that help to fix the target language in the participants' minds. Learners are exposed to the target language in a variety of different contexts. For example, they may see a word in a reading activity and then be exposed to it in a listening context. This technique helps to create a network of associations that leads to participants actually absorbing the language.
The Trainer's role
There are two aspects to the Trainer's role. Firstly, the Trainer must co-ordinate, explain and organise the course. This entails meticulous preparation in order to produce lessons which build on each other and follow a logical progression towards a clearly-defined end. Secondly, the Trainer, as the language expert, must give the participants encouragement, feedback and direction. The Trainer observes participants during practical exercises and identifies their strengths and weaknessses in order to steer them in the right direction. We pride ourselves on our attention to detail and ensure that grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary isn't overlooked. At RTS we understand that communication is not achieved through learning purely on a passive, academic level but through the ability to adopt communication strategies that will enable participants to use their language skills flexibly, confidently and to the full. |
